“There is something about the act of making cloth by hand that
connects me to a long line of weavers throughout history who have sat
in front of a loom. It is an ancient tradition
that is vanishing in a world of mass production and
manufactured perfection.”
Majeda Clarke is an award winning textile designer, based at Cockpit Arts, specialising in woven textiles. She is committed to sustainable,
local craft and works closely with weaving communities
in Bangladesh and with mills in the UK.
By simplifying pattern, highlighting the geometry of weave and
playing with strong colour, Majeda brings a modern aesthetic to an ancient craft. She
is intrigued by the imperfections in hand woven fabric, the randomness of pattern
and faded histories embedded in cloth that emphasise the identity of the maker.
